Chapter 3 - THE HOUSE THAT HAD BEEN CLEANED
The dark stain on the living-room floor was blood.
Forensic testing matched it preliminarily to Daniel. The pattern showed he had been struck near the couch, dragged toward the opened boards, and lowered into the cavity while bleeding.
Someone had scrubbed the floor afterward.
The cleaning solution was still beneath the kitchen sink.
Rachel’s fingerprints covered the bottle.
Mason’s partial print appeared on the crowbar left in the garage.
Dana searched the bedrooms.
Rachel’s closet was nearly empty. Two suitcases were missing, along with Lila’s birth certificate and several family documents.
Lila’s clothes remained inside her drawers.
Rachel had packed for herself.
Not for her daughter.
Kowalski opened the home computer. The most recent search history included:
overnight motels without identification
how long sedative remains in blood
can missing spouse delay home sale
The closing documents were saved in a folder marked NEW START.
The house was scheduled to transfer the following morning to a company called North Creek Property Group. The sale price was far below market value.
Daniel’s electronic signature appeared on the deed.
He had been legally missing for five months.
He had not been declared dead.
Without his genuine consent, the sale should have been impossible.
Dana called the title company.
The closing agent insisted she had received a video confirmation from Daniel two weeks earlier.
“Describe the call,” Dana said.
“He appeared tired. His face was partly shadowed. He confirmed he wanted the sale.”
“Did he speak freely?”
“His wife said he was recovering from an emotional breakdown.”
“Did you verify his location?”
“The notary did.”
“Name?”
The notary was Mason Cole.
Evan found the room where the video had been recorded.
A black sheet hung inside the basement storage area. A chair faced a phone tripod. A bright lamp had been positioned behind the chair, placing the seated person’s face in shadow.
A gray sweatshirt lay nearby.
It matched what “Daniel” wore during the video call.
The person in the recording may have been Mason.
Or Daniel may have been forced to perform.
The house held evidence of both possibilities.
Inside the kitchen trash, officers recovered torn pieces of duct tape containing beard hair. Daniel’s DNA would determine whether the tape had covered his mouth.
In the master bedroom, Dana discovered a framed photograph turned facedown.
It showed Daniel, Rachel, and Lila at the county fair two years earlier. Rachel had drawn a black line through Daniel’s face.
On the back she had written:
You should have stayed gone.
Kowalski entered carrying a child’s drawing.
Lila had used a red crayon to depict the living room. A large stick figure lay beneath brown lines representing the floor.
Two other figures stood above it.
One wore a blue dress.
The other had a square black body and long arms.
“Mason usually wears black work jackets,” Kowalski said.
Dana turned the paper over.
Lila had drawn a small yellow figure beside the floor.
Crackers fell from its hand.
The child had documented everything in the only language she trusted.
Evan called them into the cavity.
He had discovered a narrow air pipe hidden behind the wall. It connected to a vent beneath the couch.
That was how Daniel spoke to Lila.
The pipe also carried sounds from the living room downward.
Daniel would have heard Rachel packing.
He would have heard her leave their daughter alone.
Near the sealed basement hatch, Evan found a strand of long brown hair trapped beneath a new nail.
Rachel’s hair.
“She helped seal it,” he said.
Dana’s phone rang.
A patrol officer had located Rachel’s SUV outside a roadside motel twenty-six miles south of Ashford.
The vehicle was empty.
Inside the trunk were two suitcases, thirty thousand dollars in cash, and Lila’s birth certificate.
On the passenger seat lay a one-way bus ticket departing before dawn.
Only one name appeared on it.
