Chapter 5 - RACHEL AT THE ROADSIDE MOTEL

Police found Rachel hiding inside a laundry room behind the motel office.

She had cut her hair, changed clothes, and paid cash for a room under another name. When Dana entered, Rachel raised both hands and whispered:

“Is Lila alive?”

The question enraged Kowalski.

Dana remained controlled.

“She was alone in your house.”

“I thought Mason would take her.”

“You left before he arrived.”

“He told me he was watching the road.”

“You packed your own clothes.”

“I panicked.”

“You left your daughter above a cavity where her father was chained.”

Rachel covered her face.

“He wasn’t supposed to be there by morning.”

“Because Mason planned to release him?”

Rachel said nothing.

At the station, she requested an attorney but continued speaking before one arrived.

She claimed Daniel had returned violently.

“He broke into the house. He accused me of helping Mason steal money. He grabbed me.”

“Where are your injuries?”

“He didn’t leave marks.”

“Daniel has a fractured leg, broken ribs, restraint wounds, and sedatives in his blood.”

“Mason lost control.”

“And you injected Daniel.”

“I thought it would calm him.”

“What medication?”

Rachel did not know the name.

The syringe had contained a veterinary sedative stolen from a supplier used by Mason’s construction company for farm projects.

A human dose could cause respiratory failure.

Rachel had administered it without measuring.

She began crying.

“I didn’t want him dead.”

“Then why seal the floor?”

“Mason said Daniel would go to police and I would lose Lila.”

“You already lost her when you left her alone.”

Rachel looked toward the observation window, perhaps imagining Lila behind it.

The child was nowhere near the station.

Dana would not let Rachel use her presence as emotional leverage.

Rachel insisted Mason forced the sale.

He had transferred stolen company money through accounts in her name. If she refused to cooperate, he threatened to make her the sole suspect.

“He said Daniel already hated me.”

“Did Daniel?”

“No.”

“Then why believe Mason?”

“Because the forged records were real enough to send me to prison.”

Dana placed the motel cash on the table.

“Thirty thousand dollars.”

“Mason gave it to me.”

“For helping?”

“For disappearing.”

Rachel finally admitted the plan.

After the house closed, she was supposed to leave Indiana. Mason promised to move Daniel somewhere he would be found alive but too disoriented to accuse anyone convincingly.

Rachel knew that promise was false.

“How?” Dana asked.

“He asked me whether the cavity would flood if the rain got worse.”

Silence settled over the room.

A storm was expected before dawn.

Water from the old foundation drains emptied near the cavity. If Mason blocked the outlet, Daniel could drown beneath the living room without any visible attack.

Rachel knew.

She still left.

“Why not take Lila?” Dana asked.

“Mason said a missing mother and child would attract attention.”

“So you sacrificed her to make your disappearance look voluntary.”

Rachel’s face collapsed.

“I thought the police would find her.”

“The neighbor found her.”

The attorney arrived and ended the interview.

Before Rachel was taken to a holding cell, she turned toward Dana.

“Mason has the closing papers. He’ll still go.”

“Why?”

“The sale releases the last account.”

“What account?”

“The one he framed Daniel with.”

If the closing completed, the stolen money could be moved through North Creek and disappear.

Mason had not abandoned the plan.

He merely needed a new signature.

Kowalski entered with an update.

The title company had received a message from “Daniel” confirming that the closing would proceed remotely.

It had been sent twenty minutes after the police rescued the real Daniel.

👉 Mason knew Daniel had been found alive, yet he was still trying to complete the fraudulent sale before dawn.
