Hannah Brooks was still on her knees when Daniel Carver reached her.
The marble floor of the Carver mansion ballroom was cold beneath her palms. Crystal chandeliers blazed above forty silent guests, their champagne glasses frozen midair, their expensive faces stunned but too disciplined to show horror loudly.
Beside Hannah’s knee lay the black scissors.
Near them, a severed lock of her dark hair rested on the marble like evidence.
Claire Whitlock stood above her in a red satin gown, diamond earrings glittering, one fist lifted high with Hannah’s hair dangling from her fingers.
“Now she finally looks like the help.”
A few guests inhaled.
No one spoke.
Hannah’s hands shook over her seven-month-pregnant belly. Daniel’s charcoal jacket slipped around her shoulders as he knelt beside her, wrapping it firmly over the maid uniform Claire had just tried to make smaller than human.
Daniel looked up.
His anger was silent.
That made it worse.
He rose slowly, placing himself between Hannah and Claire.
“Put it down.”
Claire’s smile weakened.
For the first time that night, she looked unsure of the man she was supposed to marry.
Her fingers opened.
The severed hair fell beside the scissors.
Then Hannah winced.
Both hands pressed hard against her stomach.
“Daniel… the baby.”
The ballroom changed.
Daniel dropped back down instantly, one hand steadying her shoulder, the other hovering near her belly without touching too hard.
Claire stared at him.
Not at Hannah.
At Daniel’s face.
His fear was too intimate.
Too immediate.
“Why do you care about a maid’s child?” she asked.
Daniel turned slowly over his shoulder.
Every guest waited.
Hannah looked up at him, terrified.
Daniel placed one protective hand over hers.
“Because she is carrying my child.”
Claire’s face lost all color.
The champagne room became a courtroom without a judge.
