Chapter 4

Hannah hated that part of herself still wanted to apologize.

Even with Daniel’s jacket around her shoulders.

Even with her hair uneven against her cheek.

Even with Claire’s scissors on the floor.

Some old instinct from years of serving rich households whispered, Don’t make a scene. Don’t upset the family. Don’t become the reason people stare.

But her body would not obey shame anymore.

The pain crossed her belly like a warning.

She doubled slightly, one hand gripping Daniel’s sleeve.

“Daniel… the baby.”

The words escaped before she could stop them.

The ballroom heard.

Claire heard.

Daniel heard only the fear.

He turned instantly, dropping to one knee again.

“Hannah, breathe.”

His voice changed when he spoke to her.

Not softer exactly.

More human.

That was what exposed him.

A man like Daniel could make tenderness more shocking than violence.

He placed one hand behind her shoulder and looked toward his security.

“Get the doctor from the east wing. Now.”

Two suited men moved immediately from the side of the room.

No weapons.

No drama.

Just disciplined motion through frozen guests.

Claire watched all of it with dawning suspicion.

Doctor.

Security.

Daniel on his knees.

Daniel’s jacket around Hannah.

Daniel’s hand hovering near her stomach as if he had spent months wanting to do exactly that and denying himself the right.

Claire pointed at Hannah.

“Why do you care about a maid’s child?”

There it was.

Not “is she all right?”

Not “what’s happening?”

A maid’s child.

Hannah closed her eyes.

Daniel’s hand stilled over hers.

For one breath, he looked at Hannah.

She saw the question there.

May I?

Her fear answered before her pride could.

She did not nod.

She did not speak.

But she stopped pulling away.

Daniel rose halfway and turned to face the ballroom.

Claire’s face sharpened, expecting denial.

Instead, Daniel’s voice cut through the silence.

“Because she is carrying my child.”

The chandelier light seemed to harden.

Claire’s hand dropped.

Graham? No, Claire. Keep.

A guest’s champagne glass trembled against a saucer.

May you like

Hannah stared up at him, stunned not because the truth was new, but because he had chosen to say it where no one could pretend not to hear.
