Chapter 8

The west sitting room doors opened in the distance, but Hannah had not moved yet.

The doctor stayed beside her.

Daniel lowered himself again.

“I’m going to help you stand if you want.”

Hannah swallowed.

The baby’s pressure eased slightly, but her knees felt weak.

Her hair brushed unevenly against her cheek, the cut side light and exposed.

She hated that she could feel the absence.

A small violation compared to everything else, yet deeply intimate.

Claire had not only touched her.

She had changed her.

In public.

Hannah whispered, “Everyone is staring.”

Daniel’s eyes moved over the guests.

They looked away.

Fast.

“They can learn shame.”

Hannah almost laughed through tears.

It came out as a broken breath.

Daniel’s face softened again.

That softness made Claire’s expression harden with fresh pain.

She had diamonds.

A gown.

An engagement.

A ballroom.

And still Daniel looked at Hannah as if the room mattered only because she was in it.

The doctor helped Hannah shift her weight.

Daniel supported her carefully, one hand at her elbow, the other near her back.

He did not rush.

Did not drag.

Did not perform heroism.

He waited for her body to decide each movement.

That patience said more than any romantic confession could.

Hannah rose halfway.

Then stopped.

Claire suddenly spoke, lower now.

“You think this makes you noble?”

Daniel did not look at her.

Claire continued, “You hid her until I found out. Don’t stand there like a saint.”

The guests turned back.

Hannah stiffened.

There was danger in that sentence.

Not because it was fully false.

Because it was close enough to complicated truth to wound.

Daniel finally looked over his shoulder.

“I’m not claiming sainthood.”

His voice stayed calm.

“I’m claiming responsibility.”

Hannah’s grip tightened on his arm.

Claire’s face shifted.

Responsibility was not the answer she expected.

She wanted denial.

Shame.

Anger.

A secret history revealed in fragments.

Daniel gave her none.

He looked toward the guests.

“No one speaks to her. No one touches her. No one follows.”

The command settled over the ballroom.

Not theatrical.

Practical.

The room obeyed.

Hannah took one step.

Then another.

The severed hair remained on the floor behind her.

Claire stared at it as if it had become a curse she could not pick back up.
