Chapter 5

Claire’s first reaction was not heartbreak.
It was calculation.
Hannah saw it even through pain.
The flash behind Claire’s eyes was not, He betrayed me.
It was, Who heard that?
Everyone had.
Forty guests beneath chandeliers.
Two security men near the ballroom edge.
A pianist frozen beside the open grand piano.
The caterer holding a silver tray near the doorway.
The old Carver family attorney standing by the fireplace, his face unreadable.
Daniel had said it clearly.
Because she is carrying my child.
No history.
No apology.
No explanation of when, why, how long, what happened before the engagement, what promises were made, what lies had been told.
Just enough truth to protect Hannah from being dismissed as staff.
Claire swallowed hard.
“You humiliated me,” she said.
Daniel looked at the hair on the floor.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“You did that yourself.”
Her face twisted.
“You brought her into my house.”
Hannah flinched.
Daniel noticed.
His gaze turned colder.
“This is not your house.”
The sentence struck the room almost as hard as the pregnancy reveal.
Claire’s jaw tightened.
“We’re engaged.”
“You were.”
The word was not loud.
It did not resolve the engagement.
Not fully.
Not legally.
But it wounded Claire’s certainty.
She looked around as if searching for allies.
The guests avoided her eyes.
That enraged her more than open judgment would have.
Rich people rarely choose sides quickly unless survival demands it. Tonight, they were waiting to see how far Daniel would go.
Hannah’s breath hitched again.
Daniel immediately turned back.
“Stay with me.”
His hand covered hers more firmly.
The baby shifted beneath their hands.
Hannah’s eyes filled.
“Don’t make them look at me.”
Daniel’s face softened.
“I’m making them look at what they did.”
She shook her head weakly.
“What she did.”
Daniel’s gaze moved to the scissors.
Then to the severed hair.
Then to Claire.
“What she did,” he repeated.
Claire laughed suddenly, brittle and too high.
“She’s playing fragile now?”
The room went cold.
Daniel stood fully.
This time, he did not need to speak.
Two security men moved closer.
Not touching Claire.
Not removing her.
May you like
Just reminding her that the room no longer answered to her performance.
