Chapter 6

Claire saw the security men move and made the mistake of looking offended.
As if she had not just cut a pregnant woman’s hair in front of a ballroom.
As if restraint around her were an insult.
As if consequences were vulgar.
“I am not dangerous,” she snapped.
Daniel looked at the scissors.
Claire followed his gaze and said nothing.
Hannah remained on the floor, Daniel’s jacket drawn around her shoulders, trying to breathe through the tightening in her body. The baby shifted again, less painfully this time, but enough to keep her frightened.
One of the older guests whispered, “Should someone call—”
Daniel’s eyes cut toward him.
The man stopped.
No police were called.
No final outcome began.
Not yet.
This was still Daniel’s room, and Daniel chose sequence.
First Hannah.
Then the rest.
The doctor from the east wing arrived through the side door, a composed woman in evening clothes with a medical bag. The Carver family always kept people nearby who could handle emergencies without headlines.
She knelt beside Hannah.
“May I check you?”
Hannah looked at Daniel.
He stepped back half a pace.
“Your choice.”
That phrase nearly broke her.
Her choice.
In front of people who had treated her body, status, hair, and pregnancy as objects to discuss or destroy.
Hannah nodded.
The doctor worked calmly, asking quiet questions, revealing no diagnosis, making no announcement.
Claire watched with rising panic.
The lack of information punished her.
She wanted a scene she could win.
A fainting maid.
A hysterical accusation.
A dramatic removal.
Instead, the room became controlled and procedural.
Daniel bent to pick up his jacket’s edge and tuck it more securely around Hannah’s shoulders.
Claire whispered, “You love her.”
Daniel did not answer.
The silence cut deeper than confirmation.
Hannah looked down.
She did not want to hear love spoken as ammunition.
Not here.
Not while her hair lay on the marble.
Not while the baby carried more danger than any secret should.
Daniel finally turned his head toward Claire.
“I told you to put it down. You chose spectacle.”
Claire’s eyes brightened with angry tears.
“She was supposed to know her place.”
The room inhaled.
Daniel’s expression changed.
The security men stilled.
Hannah closed her eyes.
Another confession.
Not legal.
Not complete.
May you like
But true.
