Chapter 7

“She was supposed to know her place.”

Claire seemed to realize the sentence too late.

Her mouth closed.

Her eyes darted over the guests.

No one saved her.

Daniel’s family attorney lowered his champagne glass.

The doctor beside Hannah paused for half a second, then continued.

The security men remained alert.

The severed hair still lay beside the black scissors, proof too simple to explain away.

Hannah opened her eyes slowly.

The words should have crushed her.

Instead, something steadier rose through the pain.

Her place.

For months, Claire had decided Hannah’s place.

Back stairs.

Laundry corridor.

Staff entrance.

No eye contact at family dinners.

No speaking unless spoken to.

No resting during pregnancy where guests could see.

No claim to the child beyond biological inconvenience.

But Daniel had placed his jacket around her.

Had knelt beside her.

Had said the child was his.

Not enough to solve everything.

Not enough to erase fear.

But enough to make the room stop pretending Hannah was furniture.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Her place is where she is safe.”

Claire’s laugh trembled.

“With you?”

Daniel’s face did not move.

“With whoever does not cut her hair while she’s carrying a child.”

The guests shifted.

A simple standard.

Impossible for Claire to meet.

The doctor looked up at Daniel.

“She needs to be moved somewhere quiet.”

Daniel nodded.

Hannah immediately gripped his sleeve.

“No.”

He looked down.

She whispered, “Not through them.”

She could not bear walking past all those faces.

Daniel understood.

He turned to security.

“Clear the west sitting room. No guests.”

The men moved.

Claire stepped forward.

“You don’t get to end my engagement party like this.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You ended it when you picked up scissors.”

Again, not final.

Not a legal resolution.

But enough.

Claire’s face twisted.

“And what is she? Your mistress? Your secret? Your charity case?”

Hannah flinched at each word.

Daniel stepped toward Claire, stopping just close enough that she had to look up.

“She is the woman you assaulted.”

The word struck harder than mistress.

Assaulted.

Claire’s confidence cracked further.

Not because she regretted it.
