Chapter 11 - Eleanor knew more than she said

Eleanor called me the night after Lily came home.

I did not answer.

She left voicemail.

“Hannah, I’m sorry Lily was injured. But this family cannot survive if every private conflict becomes a police and corporate matter.”

There.

I saved it.

Not because it was illegal.

Because it showed her priorities.

I eventually met her in Rebecca’s office.

She wore cream.

Pearls.

Perfect posture.

“I love Lily.”

“I believe you.”

Her eyes changed.

She expected a fight.

I continued:

“You also watched Chloe slap her.”

“I was across the hall.”

“You watched enough.”

“I froze.”

“Then Julian said leash.”

She looked away.

“I heard.”

“What did you do?”

“Nothing.”

“Yes.”

Eleanor said:

“I was shocked.”

“So was I.”

She stiffened.

“I have spent my entire adult life keeping that company and family functioning.”

“And Lily was bleeding.”

The sentence landed.

She looked at her hands.

“I know.”

Then:

“I knew about Chloe.”

“I know.”

Her eyes lifted.

“Who told you?”

“Julian eventually admitted it.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

I said:

“You invited his mistress while telling me I needed to attend as his wife.”

“I thought keeping everything civil would make the eventual separation less destructive.”

“Civil for whom?”

No answer.

That was Eleanor’s failure.

Not conspiracy.

Management.

She treated betrayal as an optics problem until it became a child-safety problem.

Then she still tried to manage optics.
