Chapter 14 - Robert’s note
My father did not call Julian’s loan the morning after the gala.
I expected him to.
He surprised me.
“Why not?”
“Because anger is not a covenant default.”
Of course.
Accountants are deeply disappointing revenge partners.
The $275,000 shareholder note had specific default provisions.
Missed payments.
Insolvency.
Material misrepresentation.
Certain covenant violations.
Julian’s adultery was not listed.
His insult to Lily was not listed.
Company governance issues might eventually trigger something, but Robert waited.
Payments continued.
Three months later, Hartwell Hospitality refinanced part of its capital structure.
Robert’s note was repaid under ordinary terms as part of the closing.
Interest included.
No confiscation.
No dramatic father destroying son-in-law.
Robert said:
“I invested because I expected a return. I got one.”
Then:
“My job as Lily’s grandfather is separate.”
