Chapter 26 - Hartwell Manor again

Three years after the gala, Eleanor asked to host Lily’s eighth birthday lunch.

Not party.

Lunch.

Six people.

I said:

“I’ll ask Lily.”

Eleanor did not argue.

Lily said yes.

So we returned to Hartwell Manor.

The grand hall looked almost identical.

Marble.

Crystal staircase.

Same chandelier.

Different furniture near the library.

I expected my body to react.

It did.

Slight tension.

Then passed.

Lily ran toward the staircase.

“Don’t run.”

She stopped.

“Why?”

“Marble.”

“Oh.”

Normal safety.

No hidden meaning.

Eleanor had moved the decorative console where I once hid the second phone.

I noticed.

Did not care.

Julian arrived separately.

No Chloe.

Never Chloe.

Robert came.

He and Eleanor could now sit at the same table without discussing preferred equity, which was progress for everyone.

During lunch, Lily spilled water.

Entire glass.

Across Eleanor’s white tablecloth.

Silence for half a second.

Lily froze.

Eleanor looked at her.

Then reached for a towel.

“Napkins.”

I handed some over.

Lily whispered:

“Sorry.”

Eleanor said:

“It’s water.”

That was all.

No one hit.

No one insulted.

No one protected a tablecloth over a child.

Later, Eleanor found me alone near the staircase.

“I think about that night.”

“So do I.”

“I wish I had gone to Lily.”

“Yes.”

“I was worried about the foundation donors.”

I looked at her.

“I know.”

Her mouth tightened.

“How ugly is that?”

“Very.”

She nodded.

No defense.

Then:

“I thought if I controlled the scene, I could control what it meant.”

“That runs in your family.”

A small smile.

“Apparently.”

We stood there.

May you like

No reconciliation speech.

Enough.
