Chapter 24 - The hidden phone goes dark

I kept the second phone until every case requiring it had finished.
Not because it was evidence of everything.
Because it contained copies.
Counsel preserved relevant data.
Underlying records came from:
Carrier logs.
Company servers.
Bank statements.
Original texts.
Security video.
Witness testimony.
The second phone became less important over time.
One afternoon, Rebecca handed it back.
“You can keep it.”
“Do I need to?”
“No.”
I stared at the black screen.
For almost two years it had represented:
A place Julian could not reach.
A record no one could rewrite.
Safety.
Then I realized I did not want safety to mean owning secret devices forever.
I backed up family photos.
Confirmed legal preservation.
Factory-reset it.
Recycled it through an electronics program.
No smashing.
No river.
No dramatic hammer.
Just:
Erase.
Recycle.
Done.
May you like
The phone had done its job.
I needed a life where I did not.
