Chapter 11 - MARGARET’S COUNTERSTORYMargaret claimed the chain was not punishment for bloodline.
She said Sophie had run toward the backyard gate twice.
The chain was:
“A temporary safety measure.”
No.
Witnesses said the gate was latched.
Sophie had been trying to reach the side door.
Margaret also claimed I had intentionally brought the DNA envelope to provoke her.
True that I had it.
False that I intended a scene.
It had arrived that morning.
I placed it in my handbag because I did not want relatives finding it on the kitchen counter at home while we were away.
Then she claimed I had coached Sophie to call her a liar.
No evidence.
Then:
Claire is trying to isolate Daniel from his family.
That argument found more traction.
Because after years of Margaret’s comments, I had asked Daniel repeatedly to reduce visits.
Some texts were angry.
One said:
Your mother is obsessed with blood because she has nothing else to offer.
Not my finest sentence.
Margaret’s attorney used it to argue mutual hostility.
Fine.
Mutual hostility does not make chaining a child acceptable.

But I stopped pretending every ugly text from me was irrelevant.
Family cases become more credible when nobody insists one side has never behaved badly.
