Chapter 25 - ANOTHER BIRTHDAYSophie’s eighth birthday was at a public park.

Her choice.
Not because she feared houses.
Because the park had a climbing wall.
Daniel came.
Margaret did not.
That had been agreed.
Cake.
Pizza.
Seven children.
One disastrous piñata.
No one mentioned DNA.
At one point Sophie’s friend Olivia grabbed a decorative rope and looped it loosely around her own waist while playing pirate.
My body reacted.
Heart.
Breath.
Hands.
Sophie noticed.
“Mom?”
“I’m okay.”
She looked at the rope.
Then at me.
“Oh.”
She removed it.
I immediately said:
“You don’t have to stop because of me.”
“I don’t even like pirates.”
Fair.
Daniel had seen too.
He came over.
“Want me to move it?”
“No.”
The rope remained with the party supplies.
May you like
