Chapter 7 - MY FAILURE BEFORE THE PARTYI had warning signs.
I need to say that without stealing responsibility from Margaret.
Two months before Sophie’s birthday, she came home from visiting Margaret and asked:
“Are Dawsons better than Bennetts?”
Bennett was my maiden name.
I asked why.
She shrugged.
“Grandma said Dawson blood is strong.”
I laughed it off.
Three weeks later:
“Grandma says I got Mommy blood.”
“Yes.”
“Is that bad?”
“No.”
I finally confronted Daniel.
He called Margaret.
She denied saying anything negative.
“She’s five, Claire.”
That was his response.
I should have stopped unsupervised visits then.
I didn’t.
I told myself:
Margaret is difficult, not dangerous.
There was no history of physical harm.
Sophie loved the swimming pool at her house.
She loved Margaret’s garden.
Children can love people who say damaging things to them.
Adults then use that love as evidence everything must be fine.
I allowed the birthday party at Margaret’s because Daniel asked.
“She’s trying.”
No.
She was containing herself.
Different.
That mistake did not cause the chain.
Margaret chose the chain.
Daniel chose the slap.

But I had underestimated what repeated emotional cruelty could become when confronted publicly.
I never made that mistake again.
