Thomas Reed.
Robert’s college friend.
Insurance broker.
Died six years earlier.
His name also appeared on three Christmas cards saved in a box.
Nothing suspicious.
Then Daniel found a letter.
Not a confession.
Worse because it was ordinary.
Dated February 1986.
Nine months before Daniel’s birth.
Thomas wrote:
Margaret, I meant what I said. Robert is my friend, and whatever happened between us cannot happen again. I will not contact you unless you choose to tell him.
That was enough to open a door.
Not enough to prove paternity.
Margaret said the letter referred to a kiss.
One mistake.
Nothing more.
Daniel asked:
“Then why keep it forty years?”
She answered:
“I keep everything.”
Fair.
She did.
Receipts from 1992.
School drawings.
Old utility bills.
Still, the timing mattered.
Then we found a second letter.
Not romantic.
From Margaret to Thomas, returned unopened.
I need you to understand there may be consequences from August.
