Chapter 23 - SOPHIE ASKS WHAT DNA MEANSAt seven, Sophie asked:
“Why did Grandma say Daddy wasn’t my daddy?”
I had hoped we could delay that.
Children do not respect parental timelines.
“She believed something that wasn’t true.”
“Why?”
“Because Grandma had some old family information she didn’t understand honestly.”
That was too adult.
Sophie frowned.
“What’s DNA?”
I gave the simple version.
“Instructions in your body you get from biological parents.”
“Do I have Daddy’s?”
“Yes.”
“Did the paper say?”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
Then:
“Would he still be Daddy if the paper said no?”
There it was.
The question under the entire disaster.
I thought of Robert.
Daniel.
Thomas.
Margaret.
Then answered:
“We would have had important adult things to understand. But the years Daddy has loved and raised you would still be real.”
Sophie thought.
“Then Grandma was being weird.”
“Yes.”
