part 1

PART 1
“Her mother-in-law tore her dress and screamed that her son owned the house… until the wife revealed the deed was never in his name.”
Lorraine Vance tore the front of Audrey’s white dress in the middle of the kitchen and called it discipline.
The fabric ripped loudly enough to silence the whole room.
Audrey stumbled backward against the marble island, one hand clutching her chest, the other pressed to her mouth.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Her cheeks burned with humiliation.
Ryan stood behind his mother in a navy suit, looking at the floor as if the floor needed defending more than his wife.
Lorraine held the torn piece of fabric in her fist like a trophy.
“My son pays for everything in this house!”
Audrey looked at Ryan.
Just once.
That one look held five years of marriage.
Five years of covering for him.
Five years of explaining his silence.
Five years of pretending his mother’s cruelty was just old-fashioned love.
Ryan swallowed.
“Audrey…”
His voice was weak.
“Just apologize.”
Something inside Audrey went still.
The crying did not stop all at once.
It faded like a door closing.
She lowered one hand from the torn dress and reached toward her phone on the counter.
Lorraine laughed.
“What are you doing?”
Audrey unlocked the screen with shaking fingers.
Not because she was afraid.
Because her body had finally caught up to what her heart had known for years.
“You really thought silence meant I had nothing?”
Ryan’s face changed first.
Not Lorraine’s.
Ryan knew that tone.
It was the voice Audrey used when she had already checked the facts.
Lorraine’s grip tightened on the torn fabric.
“What are you talking about?”
Audrey stood straighter.
Her dress was ruined.
Her face was wet.
But her eyes were cold now.
“Lorraine, this house was never his.”
The kitchen went silent.
The chandelier hummed faintly above them.
Ryan looked like someone had turned off the lights inside his body.
Lorraine blinked.
Then laughed sharply.
“That is absurd.”
Audrey tapped the phone and turned it toward her.
The document on the screen was blurred from where they stood, but the deed number at the top was unmistakable to Ryan.
Audrey’s voice was calm.
“This kitchen.”
“These counters.”
“That driveway.”
“The bedroom you walked into without knocking.”
“All mine.”
She looked at the torn fabric in Lorraine’s hand.
May you like
“And now you just assaulted the owner on camera.”
