PART 4

Audrey’s phone was not the only thing recording.

The kitchen camera had been installed after Lorraine accused the housekeeper of stealing silverware.

Lorraine had demanded it.

Ryan had agreed.

Audrey had paid for it.

And like every system Audrey paid for, she understood exactly where the backup went.

The camera had recorded Lorraine tearing the dress.

It had recorded Ryan refusing to help.

It had recorded Natalie whispering, “Mom, maybe stop,” only after the deed was mentioned.

It had recorded everything.

Audrey opened the security app and saw the red recording icon blinking in the corner.

For the first time all night, she smiled.

Lorraine saw it and stepped back.

“What is funny?”

Audrey placed the phone on the counter.

“The camera you asked for.”

Ryan’s face drained.

“Audrey, don’t.”

She looked at him.

“Now you want to speak?”

Lorraine turned toward the ceiling corner.

The tiny black camera sat above the pantry door.

Watching.

Remembering.

Audrey tapped another file.

The deed appeared.

Then the trust certificate.

Then the insurance policy.

Then the mortgage release letter.

Ryan reached for the phone.

Audrey pulled it back.

“Don’t.”

Her voice was low.

He stopped.

Not because he respected her.

Because he recognized the attorney in her had arrived.

Audrey looked at Lorraine.

“This property is owned by the Mercer Residence Trust.”

“I am the sole trustee.”

“Ryan has no ownership interest.”

Lorraine’s mouth opened.

Closed.

Opened again.

Natalie whispered, “Ryan?”

He did not answer.

Audrey continued.

“The renovation was paid from my account.”

“The taxes were paid from my account.”

“The staff are paid by me.”

“The vehicles in the garage are leased through my company.”

She looked at Ryan.

“And the credit line you told your mother was yours?”

“That was secured against assets you did not own.”

Ryan’s eyes sharpened.

“That is private.”

Audrey laughed once.

“Lorraine tore my dress in my kitchen.”

“Privacy left before the silk did.”

Lorraine’s voice shook with anger.

“You manipulated my son.”

Audrey touched the torn edge of the dress.

“No.”

“I carried him.”

“And now I am putting him down.”

The doorbell rang.

Everyone turned.

Audrey did not.

She already knew who it was.
