PART 6

Lorraine tried tears next.

Audrey had expected that.

Cruel people often move from violence to victimhood without changing seats.

Lorraine pressed one hand to her chest and looked at Ryan.

“My son only wanted to give his wife a beautiful life.”

Audrey stared at her.

“You ripped that wife’s dress.”

Lorraine’s tears stopped.

Only for a second.

Then she tried again.

“I was emotional.”

Grace opened her folder.

“The footage shows you crossing the kitchen, grabbing fabric, and pulling with both hands.”

Lorraine stiffened.

“I did not mean to expose her.”

Audrey’s face went cold.

“But you did mean to punish me.”

Ryan stepped in.

“This is getting out of hand.”

Audrey turned to him.

“No.”

“It is finally in hand.”

Grace placed a small recorder on the counter.

“Formal notice.”

“Lorraine Vance, you are no longer permitted on this property after tonight.”

“Ryan Vance, your access to the residence will be restricted pending separation terms.”

Ryan’s voice rose.

“You cannot bar me from my home.”

Audrey looked at him for a long moment.

“That is the point, Ryan.”

“It was never your home.”

Natalie covered her mouth.

Lorraine glared at Audrey.

“You are enjoying this.”

Audrey touched the tear in her dress.

“No.”

“I enjoyed choosing paint colors.”

“I enjoyed planting roses outside the breakfast room.”

“I enjoyed thinking my husband loved me enough to tell the truth.”

Her voice shook for the first time.

“I do not enjoy learning he loved the lie more.”

Ryan’s expression softened.

The performance changed again.

“Audrey.”

“Baby.”

“I panicked.”

“My mother puts pressure on me.”

Audrey smiled sadly.

“There he is.”

“The man who only apologizes when losing access.”

Grace’s phone buzzed.

She checked it.

“The bank has confirmed receipt of the fraud review request.”

Ryan’s face went white.

“What did you send?”

Audrey answered.

“Everything you sent them.”

“The emails.”

“The asset statements.”

“The valuation letters.”

“The signatures you hoped I would not notice.”

Lorraine looked at her son.

“Ryan?”

He had no answer.

For the first time that night, Lorraine looked afraid of him.

Not for Audrey.
