PART 7
Police arrived at 10:42 p.m.
Audrey had not planned to call them.
Not at first.
She wanted Lorraine removed.
She wanted Ryan exposed.
She wanted her house back.
But when Grace reviewed the camera footage, she said the word Audrey had been avoiding.
Assault.
So Audrey made the call.
The officers listened to the summary in the foyer while Lorraine sat rigidly in the kitchen and Ryan paced like a caged animal.
Natalie cried quietly into a napkin.
No one comforted her.
The officers asked Audrey if she wanted to make a formal complaint.
Ryan looked at her through the doorway.
His eyes pleaded now.
Not with love.
With fear.
Audrey remembered the moment he told her to apologize.
She looked at the officer.
“Yes.”
Lorraine made a strangled sound.
“This is insane.”
The officer turned to her.
“Ma’am, we have reviewed the footage.”
“You will need to come with us to make a statement.”
Lorraine stood.
“You cannot arrest me for fabric.”
Audrey’s voice carried from the foyer.
“It was attached to my body.”
That silenced her.
Ryan stepped forward.
“Can we handle this privately?”
Grace answered before Audrey could.
“You have been handling things privately for five years.”
“That is why we are here.”
The officers escorted Lorraine out first.
She did not look at Audrey.
She looked at Ryan.
Like a mother finally seeing the son she had raised and not liking the result.
Ryan stayed in the kitchen after the door closed.
The house felt larger without Lorraine’s voice in it.
Audrey thought relief would arrive.
Instead, grief did.
A heavy, humiliating grief.
The kind that comes when you realize a marriage did not end in one terrible moment.
It ended in a thousand smaller betrayals you kept explaining away.
Ryan approached slowly.
“Audrey, please.”
Grace shifted closer.
Audrey lifted one hand.
“It is fine.”
She faced him.
“Tell me one truth.”
Ryan swallowed.
“I love you.”
Audrey shook her head.
“No.”
“One truth.”
His face broke.
Then hardened.
“I needed the house.”
There it was.
Not her.
Not them.
The house.
The status.
The proof of success.
Audrey nodded once.
“Thank you.”
Then she turned to Grace.
May you like
“Change the locks tonight.”
