part 3

PART 3
The dress was not a wedding dress.
That was the cruelty of it.
It was white, yes.
Silk.
Elegant.
The dress Audrey had worn for their fifth anniversary dinner because Ryan said he wanted to “start fresh.”
She believed him for almost twelve minutes.
Then Lorraine arrived uninvited with Ryan’s sister, Natalie, and a bottle of champagne Audrey had not asked for.
The dinner Audrey prepared sat untouched on the dining table.
Ryan said his mother only wanted to celebrate them.
Lorraine said a wife who loved her husband welcomed family.
Natalie smirked and asked if Audrey had finally learned how to cook without making everything “corporate.”
Audrey let that pass.
She had learned long ago that reacting gave Lorraine a stage.
But then Lorraine raised her glass and said, “To my son, who built this beautiful home and gave Audrey a place she could never have earned alone.”
Audrey set down her fork.
“Lorraine, that is not true.”
Ryan’s eyes flicked toward her.
Warning.
Not apology.
Audrey continued.
“I bought this house.”
The room froze.
Lorraine laughed.
“Oh, sweetheart.”
“No one believes that.”
Ryan said her name under his breath.
“Audrey.”
But Audrey was tired.
Tired of shrinking inside rooms she paid for.
Tired of watching Ryan choose comfort over truth.
Tired of being polite to people who mistook kindness for permission.
She stood.
“I have the deed.”
That was when Lorraine’s smile vanished.
Not because she believed Audrey.
Because she hated the possibility.
Lorraine crossed the kitchen in three sharp steps.
“You arrogant little liar.”
Audrey backed away instinctively.
Lorraine grabbed the front of the white dress.
Ryan moved.
Only half a step.
Then stopped.
His mother yanked.
The silk tore down Audrey’s chest.
Natalie gasped.
Not from sympathy.
From excitement turning into fear.
Audrey clutched herself, shocked by the violence of it.
Lorraine held the ripped fabric.
“My son pays for everything in this house!”
Ryan said nothing.
Audrey looked at him.
One final chance.
One human second.
Defend me.
Tell the truth.
Choose me.
Ryan looked away.
“Audrey…”
“Just apologize.”
That was when Audrey understood he had not been trapped between his wife and his mother.
May you like
He had been using both.
