part 2

PART 2

Audrey had bought the house before Ryan ever proposed.

That was the part the Vance family never bothered to learn.

They saw the white stone mansion, the circular driveway, the imported marble, and the lake view, then assumed a man had paid for it.

Men like Ryan benefited from assumptions.

Women like Audrey were expected to smile through them.

Before she married Ryan, Audrey Mercer had been a real estate attorney.

Not glamorous.

Not loud.

Not the kind of woman who walked into rooms announcing power.

But she knew contracts the way other people knew prayers.

She knew signatures.

Ownership clauses.

Trust structures.

Prenuptial language.

Hidden liabilities.

She had built her life one closing at a time after her father died and left her nothing but a warning.

Never let love make you careless with paper.

Audrey did not.

The mansion had been purchased through a private trust in her name.

The renovation was paid from her investment account.

The furniture came later.

The kitchen was her gift to herself after winning the biggest commercial property case of her career.

Then she met Ryan.

He was charming in a soft, polished way.

He had old-family manners without old-family money.

He told Audrey he admired successful women.

He said his mother was difficult but harmless.

He said he wanted a marriage built on partnership.

The first year almost looked like one.

Then Lorraine began visiting every weekend.

Then every Thursday.

Then “just for a few days.”

Then she started moving Audrey’s things.

Changing flowers.

Rearranging cabinets.

Correcting how Audrey hosted guests in her own dining room.

Ryan always laughed it off.

“She just wants to feel included.”

Audrey tried to be patient.

Then Lorraine began telling people Ryan had “given Audrey a beautiful life.”

At charity lunches.

At Christmas dinners.

At Ryan’s office events.

Audrey waited for Ryan to correct her.

He never did.

The lie became useful to him.

People respected him more when they believed he owned the house.

Clients treated him like a man with deeper pockets.

His mother treated Audrey like a guest who had overstayed.

Audrey saw it happening.

She said nothing.

Not because she was weak.

Because she was documenting.

Every payment.

Every deed.

Every renovation invoice.

Every dollar Ryan borrowed from her and called family money.

And every insult Lorraine delivered under Audrey’s roof.
