Chapter 3

The house looked perfect from the outside.

Fresh paint.

Trimmed hedges.

Polished windows.

A wreath on the front door.

Claire’s money had kept it beautiful.

Inside, the dining room looked staged for comfort. White bowls. Sunlit walls. Clean chairs. Smartphones near folded napkins. A bright, upscale family scene designed to convince any visitor that nothing terrible could live there.

Then Claire saw Lily under the table.

The perfection cracked.

Daniel stood near the chair as if Lily were a mess he wished someone would clean up.

Margaret did not rise.

Vanessa Cole appeared from the adjoining room, dressed softly in cream and beige, as though she had already learned how to make herself look harmless in another woman’s home.

Claire knew her name.

Daniel had called Vanessa “a family friend.”

Later, “Noah’s mother.”

Later still, nothing at all.

Noah sat at the table with Lily’s red bowl in front of him. The boy did not look cruel. He looked confused, watching adults with the quiet fear children develop when they know the rules change too fast.

Claire kept her eyes on Lily.

“Sweetheart,” she whispered.

Lily crawled out slowly, clutching the teddy bear.

Her knees were dusty.

Her wrist had faint marks Claire did not let herself stare at too long.

Not yet.

First, safety.

Then proof.

Then consequences.

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“Don’t touch her like you can just walk back in.”

Claire lifted Lily carefully, not forcing the child to stand.

“She is my daughter.”

Margaret laughed softly.

“Only when convenient.”

Claire’s fingers tightened around Lily’s hand.

That was when she noticed the small black security camera above the kitchen doorway.

Still there.

Still angled toward the dining room.

Claire had installed it years ago after a break-in attempt.

Daniel had told her it stopped working.

He had lied about that too.
