Chapter 8

Daniel began to calculate.

Claire could see it.

The anger tightened into strategy.

He looked at the front door.

At Vanessa.

At Margaret.

At the camera.

At Claire’s phone.

Then he smiled.

A small, dangerous smile.

“You think a recording fixes five years?”

Claire said nothing.

“It shows you abandoned her.”

“No,” Claire said. “It shows what I walked into.”

Margaret stood now, pearls trembling.

“You have no idea what it costs to maintain this family.”

Claire turned toward her.

“I know exactly what I sent.”

Daniel laughed.

“You sent what I told you to send.”

That was another sentence Claire knew her attorney would want.

She kept her face still.

Daniel continued, believing momentum meant victory.

“House payments. Account transfers. Medical support. School costs. You never asked enough questions.”

Claire’s eyes did not leave his.

“I asked.”

“You asked from thousands of miles away.”

“Because you made sure every answer came through you.”

His smile faded.

Vanessa whispered, “Daniel, stop talking.”

He ignored her.

That told Claire how deep his arrogance ran.

He still believed the room could be dominated by volume.

But recordings do not care about volume.

They care about words.

And Daniel had spent years hiding behind words.
