Chapter 4

Daniel tried irritation first.
It was his safest mask.
“You can’t barge in here after five years and act like a mother,” he said.
Claire looked at him.
“I paid for this house every month.”
“You paid because you owed us.”
“Owed you for what?”
“For raising her.”
Lily flinched at the word her.
Claire felt it.
Margaret leaned back in her chair.
“Daniel did what you couldn’t. He kept the household together.”
Claire looked around.
At Vanessa standing near the doorway.
At Noah sitting with Lily’s bowl.
At Lily half-hidden behind Claire’s coat.
“This is the household?”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“I didn’t know she was kept like that.”
Daniel snapped, “Stay out of this.”
Vanessa went silent immediately.
Claire noticed that too.
Daniel controlled more than one woman in this room.
But today, she cared first about the smallest one.
She knelt again and looked into Lily’s face.
“Have you been eating?”
Lily’s eyes moved toward Margaret.
Not Daniel.
Margaret.
Claire’s stomach turned.
Margaret lifted the red bowl.
“She refuses food when she’s being difficult.”
Noah looked down at his spoon.
Claire did not accuse the boy.
He was a child placed in a cruel arrangement by adults.
But the bowl mattered.
Lily’s favorite bowl.
The one with the faded red rim Claire bought before London.
Seeing it in front of someone else made five years of wire transfers collapse into one question.
“Where did the money go?”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Margaret answered before he could.
“We used your money because this family deserved it.”
Claire’s shock disappeared.
There it was.
The sentence she needed.

She reached for her phone.
