Chapter 6

Vanessa was the first to understand the danger.
Her eyes moved from Claire’s phone to the hidden camera.
Then to Daniel.
Then to Margaret.
She stepped back.
Only one step.
But in that room, one step was a confession of distance.
“Daniel,” she whispered, “what accounts?”
He turned on her.
“Not now.”
Claire watched Vanessa’s face change.
Vanessa had known something.
Maybe not Lily under the table.
Maybe not the full theft.
Maybe not the way Daniel used Claire’s money.
But she had known enough to live in another woman’s house, near another woman’s daughter, while Daniel called the situation complicated.
Noah looked at his mother.
“Mom?”
Vanessa reached for him immediately and pulled his chair slightly back from the table.
That movement made Margaret angry.
“Don’t act innocent now.”
Vanessa’s mouth opened.
Closed.
Claire filed that away.
Not for vengeance.
For facts.
Daniel saw control slipping and reached for the oldest weapon he had.
“You left,” he said to Claire.
The words came out like a verdict.
Claire turned toward him.
“You made leaving the condition for keeping access to my child.”
“You chose work.”
“I chose survival after you threatened to make Lily disappear legally.”
Margaret hissed, “You were unstable.”
Claire looked at her.
“No. I was profitable from a distance.”
That landed.
Daniel’s face hardened.
Margaret looked toward the phone.
Too late.

The confession had already begun to shape itself.
