Chapter 7

Lily stayed pressed against Claire’s side.
Her small fingers twisted into the trench coat fabric.
Claire wanted to lift her and run from the house immediately.
Every instinct screamed it.
But she knew Daniel would weaponize any sudden movement.
He would say she abducted Lily.
Say she was unstable.
Say she stormed in after years away and frightened everyone.
So Claire stayed still.
Controlled.
Maternal rage locked behind discipline.
She lowered her voice for Lily only.
“You are safe beside me.”
Lily looked up.
“Are you real?”
Claire’s throat nearly closed.
“Yes, baby.”
“Grandma said you didn’t want me anymore.”
Margaret’s face tightened.
Daniel looked away.
That was the first moment Claire almost lost control.
Not when she saw Lily under the table.
Not when Margaret admitted the money.
Not when Daniel claimed ownership.
But when Lily revealed the shape of the lie inside her heart.
Claire knelt carefully.
“I wanted you every day.”
Lily’s eyes filled.
“Then why didn’t you come?”
Claire pressed her forehead lightly to Lily’s, not answering with adult complexity the child could not carry yet.
“Because I believed the wrong people. I will spend the rest of my life proving that I came back.”
Daniel scoffed.
The sound was small.
Cruel.
Automatic.
Claire stood again.
The phone remained recording at her side.
The camera remained above the doorway.

Daniel had no idea that his next words would matter even more than the last.
