Chapter 9

Claire raised the phone again.

Not high.

Just enough.

“Say what you used the money for.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“I don’t answer to you.”

“You did when you requested it.”

Margaret snapped, “She sent it for the family.”

Claire looked at her.

“For Lily.”

“For the household,” Margaret said.

“For Lily.”

Daniel stepped closer again.

This time Claire did not move.

Lily hid behind her, teddy bear pressed to her chest.

Daniel pointed toward the girl.

“She had food. She had shelter. She had our name.”

Claire’s voice turned cold.

“She was under the table.”

“She belongs where we say she belongs.”

The sentence hung in the dining room like something rotten finally uncovered.

Vanessa’s face went pale.

Noah looked scared now.

Margaret whispered, “Daniel.”

But Daniel was too angry to hear the warning.

Claire lowered the phone slightly and glanced toward the camera.

Daniel followed her eyes.

Only then did he truly see the small red indicator light above the kitchen doorway.

His mouth opened.

Claire’s expression remained calm.

The trap was not clever.

It was simple.

Let Daniel speak in the house he believed he owned, near the child he believed he controlled, about the money he believed he had already taken.
