part 1

PART 1
“She came home at 1 a.m. covered in wounds… then the hospital revealed the loss her husband’s family tried to hide.”
At 1:07 in the morning, Madeline Vale heard someone scratching at her front door.
Not knocking.
Scratching.
Like whoever stood outside no longer had the strength to lift a hand.
She opened the door and found her daughter on the porch.
Clara was barefoot.
Her gray shirt was torn at the shoulder.
Her face was swollen.
One eye nearly shut.
Blood had dried beneath her split lip.
For one second, Madeline could not move.
Then Clara collapsed into her arms.
“Mom…”
Her voice was barely human.
“Don’t make me go back to his house.”
Madeline dropped to her knees and caught her daughter before her head hit the floor.
Behind Clara, the street was dark.
No car.
No coat.
No phone.
Just her daughter, shaking like she had run through hell and barely made it home.
Madeline held her so tightly Clara cried out in pain.
Madeline loosened her grip immediately.
“Oh, baby.”
“What did he do?”
Clara only shook her head.
“Please.”
“Don’t let Julian take me.”
Madeline’s tears stopped.
Something colder took their place.
“He will never touch you again.”
At the hospital, nurses rushed Clara into a bright corridor.
Doctors called for scans.
A security guard moved near the entrance because Clara panicked every time a man in a dark coat passed.
Madeline stayed beside the bed.
She held Clara’s hand while Dr. Reed examined the bruises.
She held Clara’s hand when the ultrasound machine was brought in.
She held Clara’s hand when Dr. Reed’s face changed.
That was the moment Madeline knew the night still had another cruelty waiting.
Dr. Reed lowered his eyes.
“I’m sorry…”
“The baby didn’t survive.”
Clara made a sound Madeline would remember for the rest of her life.
Not a scream.
Not exactly.
Something smaller.
Something breaking.
Then Julian arrived.
Perfect coat.
Perfect hair.
Perfect lie already prepared.
He stood at the corridor entrance and looked annoyed that there were witnesses.
“She fell.”
“She’s unstable.”
Madeline slowly turned toward him while still holding Clara.
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
“You touched my daughter once.”
“Now I touch everything you own.”
May you like
Julian’s smile disappeared.
