part 3

PART 3
The Hartwell mansion had cameras everywhere except the rooms where truth happened.
That was not an accident.
The front gate recorded guests.
The foyer recorded arrivals.
The dining room recorded charity dinners.
But the south staircase, the private sitting room, and the hallway outside Clara’s bedroom had blind spots.
Madeline noticed that from the security plan.
She had seen the same trick in corporate harassment cases.
People do not remove cameras from nowhere.
They remove them from habits.
Clara called her one afternoon from a bathroom.
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Mom, did you ever feel like you were disappearing?”
Madeline sat very still.
“Tell me where you are.”
Clara cried silently for several seconds.
Then the call ended.
Madeline drove to the mansion again.
This time, Julian came outside before she reached the door.
“Clara is sleeping.”
Madeline looked at his shirt cuffs.
There was a faint red mark on one sleeve.
“Wake her.”
His smile hardened.
“You do not get to command my household.”
Madeline stepped closer.
“She is my daughter.”
“And she is my wife.”
That was the first time Madeline understood he thought marriage was a transfer of ownership.
Two days later, Clara sent a text.
I’m fine.
Please don’t come.
Madeline knew her daughter’s writing.
That text was not Clara.
Then came the night.
Clara had been six months pregnant.
Julian hosted a private dinner for investors.
Victoria seated Clara at the far end of the table and corrected how she held her glass.
After dinner, Clara asked Julian why money was missing from the baby trust Madeline had created.
Julian followed her upstairs.
Victoria followed both of them.
Clara remembered pieces.
Julian grabbing her arm.
Victoria saying pregnant women could be replaced more easily than reputations.
A shove.
A fall.
Not down the grand staircase.
Down the smaller service stairs near the pantry.
Then pain.
Then darkness.
When Clara woke, she was on a guest-room floor.
Victoria stood over her with a towel.
Julian said, “You fell.”
Clara touched her stomach and began crying.
Victoria leaned close.
“If you tell anyone, we will say you were unstable.”
“And no judge will give a baby to a woman who harms herself for attention.”
Clara ran when they left her alone.
No shoes.
No phone.
No coat.
