part 4

PART 4
Dr. Reed did not let Julian near Clara’s bed.
That was the first thing that made Julian angry.
The second was Madeline standing between him and the curtain.
The third was the police officer who had quietly taken position beside the nurses’ station.
Julian looked around the corridor as if the room had made a mistake.
“I am her husband.”
Dr. Reed’s voice stayed professional.
“She is under medical evaluation.”
“I need to speak with her.”
Madeline said, “You need to leave.”
Julian gave her the smile he used at charity dinners.
“Madeline, this is family.”
Madeline looked at Clara through the glass partition.
Her daughter was curled sideways on the hospital bed, one hand still resting where the baby had been.
“No.”
“This is evidence.”
Julian’s smile twitched.
“She is confused.”
“She has been emotional for weeks.”
“She fell.”
Dr. Reed stepped forward with the medical file.
“The injuries are inconsistent with a single accidental fall.”
Julian’s eyes sharpened.
“You are not a detective.”
“No.”
Dr. Reed looked toward the officer.
“But I know what repeated trauma looks like.”
Madeline watched Julian carefully.
He was not grieving.
Not shocked.
Not even afraid for Clara.
He was calculating.
That made her hate him more than the bruises did.
Inside the room, Clara stirred.
Her voice came weakly through the open door.
“Mom.”
Madeline turned instantly.
Clara’s eyes were open.
Wet.
Terrified.
“Don’t let him take me.”
Julian tried to step forward.
The officer blocked him.
“Sir, stay where you are.”
Julian’s mask cracked.
“She is my wife.”
Madeline walked back to Clara’s bedside.
“She is my daughter first.”
Dr. Reed lowered his voice.
“Clara, I need to ask you something.”
“Did someone hurt you tonight?”
Clara looked at Julian.
Her body began trembling.
Madeline held her hand.
“Look at me, baby.”
“Only me.”
Clara swallowed.
“Julian did.”
“Victoria helped him.”
The officer reached for his radio.
Julian laughed, but it was too loud.
“You hear that?”
“She is blaming my mother now.”
Madeline did not raise her voice.
“Officer, document his statement.”
Julian stopped laughing.
That was when he began to understand Madeline had not threatened revenge emotionally.
May you like
She had meant it professionally.
