part 8

PART 8
Clara’s first court appearance happened by video from the hospital.
She wore a soft blue sweater over her gown.
Her bruises were still visible.
Madeline sat just out of frame, holding her hand.
Julian appeared in court in a tailored dark suit.
Victoria sat behind him in cream pearls.
They looked like money pretending to be innocence.
The judge reviewed the emergency protective order.
Julian’s attorney argued that Clara was confused and traumatized.
Dr. Reed testified first.
He described the injuries.
He described the pregnancy loss.
He described Clara’s fear when Julian appeared in the corridor.
Then the forensic nurse testified.
Multiple injuries.
Different stages of healing.
Marks inconsistent with accidental falling.
The detective presented the text messages.
No hospital until we know about the baby.
If she loses it, we say she fell before telling us.
The courtroom went silent after that.
Even Julian’s attorney stopped shuffling papers.
Then Clara spoke.
Her voice was soft.
At first, people leaned forward to hear her.
“I begged him to take me to the hospital.”
“He said his mother needed to decide what to say first.”
Madeline closed her eyes.
Clara continued.
“I asked if the baby was okay.”
“He told me to stop being dramatic.”
Victoria’s face did not move.
Julian looked at the table.
Clara looked into the camera.
“I ran because I thought if I stayed, they would make me disappear too.”
The judge granted the protective order.
Julian was barred from contacting Clara.
Victoria was barred from the hospital.
The Hartwell mansion was added to the evidence preservation order.
The baby trust remained frozen.
Julian’s face tightened when he heard that last part.
Not when the baby was mentioned.
Not when Clara described fear.
When the money was frozen.
Madeline saw it.
So did the judge.
After the hearing, Clara turned off the video and broke down.
Madeline held her carefully.
“I hate that I’m still scared,” Clara whispered.
Madeline brushed her hair back.
“Fear does not mean they still own you.”
“It means your body remembers danger.”
“And we will teach it safety again.”
Clara cried harder.
For the first time, that crying did not sound like defeat.
May you like
It sounded like something leaving.
