PART 5
Madeline made six phone calls before sunrise.
The first was to a criminal attorney.
The second was to a forensic accountant.
The third was to a private investigator.
The fourth was to the bank managing Clara’s baby trust.
The fifth was to a judge she had once helped expose in a corruption case.
The sixth was to Victoria Hartwell.
Victoria answered on the fourth ring.
Her voice was silk over steel.
“Madeline, this is not a good time.”
Madeline stood in the hospital corridor, watching Clara sleep behind glass.
“My daughter is in the hospital.”
Victoria sighed.
“That is tragic.”
“She should have listened when we told her to rest.”
Madeline’s voice went very quiet.
“You are going to stop talking now.”
Victoria paused.
“I beg your pardon?”
“You touched my daughter.”
“You threatened my grandchild.”
“You helped your son steal from a trust created for that child.”
“And you were foolish enough to do all of it while believing your family was the only one with lawyers.”
Victoria laughed softly.
“You cannot prove a word.”
Madeline looked at the nurse walking toward her with the sealed clothing bag.
Clara’s torn shirt.
Blood on the sleeve.
Skin under the nails.
A hospital chain-of-custody label.
“I do not need everything today.”
“I only need enough to start.”
Then she ended the call.
By noon, the missing money from Clara’s baby trust had been traced to a Hartwell holding company.
Julian had used forged authorization to move it.
Victoria had countersigned the transfer as “family administrator.”
Charles Hartwell had known.
That mattered.
Madeline did not want only the hand that struck Clara.
She wanted every hand that built the room where Clara could be struck.
Dr. Reed documented every bruise.
The forensic nurse photographed every injury.
A social worker took Clara’s first statement.
A detective requested the Hartwell mansion security logs.
The logs showed something important.
At 12:41 a.m., the front gate opened.
At 12:44 a.m., Julian’s car left.
At 12:46 a.m., Victoria called the family attorney.
At 1:07 a.m., Clara arrived at Madeline’s house.
Julian claimed Clara had left alone after falling.
The timeline disagreed.
Madeline sat beside Clara’s bed that evening and brushed hair from her daughter’s swollen face.
Clara whispered, “What are you going to do?”
Madeline kissed her forehead.
May you like
“Everything they thought money would stop.”
