PART 6
Victoria arrived at the hospital with a lawyer and no flowers.
That told Madeline everything.
The lawyer spoke first.
“My clients are deeply concerned about Clara’s mental state.”
Madeline looked at him.
“Your clients?”
Victoria lifted her chin.
“My son and I only want what is best for her.”
From the bed, Clara made a small sound of fear.
Madeline stepped between them.
“You are not allowed near her.”
Victoria smiled.
“You cannot keep a wife from her husband.”
The detective answered from the doorway.
“We can tonight.”
Julian appeared behind his mother.
He looked tired now.
Not remorseful.
Cornered.
“Clara,” he said softly.
“I know you are scared.”
Madeline turned to him.
“Do not speak to her.”
His eyes hardened.
“You do not control this marriage.”
Madeline’s smile was thin.
“No.”
“But I control the trust you stole from.”
That landed.
Julian looked at Victoria before he could stop himself.
The detective saw it.
So did the lawyer.
So did Clara.
Madeline opened a folder.
“Emergency freeze was granted at 3:22 p.m.”
“All accounts connected to the baby trust are locked.”
“The Hartwell holding company is under review.”
“And every transfer you made after Clara’s pregnancy announcement has been flagged.”
Julian’s attorney went pale.
Victoria’s face sharpened.
“You have no authority.”
Madeline looked at Clara.
“My daughter gave it to me years ago.”
“She signed medical, legal, and financial emergency powers after her father died.”
“Because unlike you, she understood that family means protection, not ownership.”
Julian stepped forward.
The officer moved immediately.
“Sir, back up.”
Julian pointed at Clara.
“She is lying.”
“She has been unstable.”
Clara flinched.
Then something changed in her face.
Not courage exactly.
Exhaustion turning into refusal.
She lifted her head.
“You said that before you pushed me.”
Julian froze.
Clara’s voice shook, but it continued.
“You said no one would believe a pregnant woman who cried too much.”
Victoria hissed, “Clara.”
Clara looked at her mother-in-law.
“You said the baby would be better off without me.”
The corridor went silent.
Madeline slowly turned toward the detective.
“Write that down.”
May you like
The detective already was.
