Chapter 12 - Northline suspends Daniel
Northline placed Daniel on administrative leave.
Paid initially.
The company statement said:
“We are investigating concerns regarding confidential information and financial controls.”
Daniel was furious.
“They’re making me the problem.”
Caroline Shaw said:
“You are part of the problem.”
He stared.
She continued:
“You approved unsupported invoices.”
“Under Nathan’s direction.”
“Still you.”
“I didn’t know they were fake.”
“Then say that. Do not say you had no role.”
She also criticized him for taking company records home beyond policy.
Daniel responded:
“If I hadn’t copied them, Nathan could’ve deleted everything.”
“Maybe.”
“Then?”
“Good motive does not automatically make process good.”
Daniel hated lawyers who separated those things.
He needed one.
Northline also accused him of improperly reclassifying three questionable payments during quarter close.
That was true.
The payments totaled $238,000.
They had initially been recorded as emergency logistics expense.
Supporting documents were missing.
Daniel moved them into prepaid operational services pending documentation.
Why?
Nathan pressured him.
And Daniel wanted quarter-end reporting to close without a large unexplained expense variance.
Did Daniel know the vendors were fraudulent then?
He said no.
Emails supported uncertainty.
But he knew documentation was inadequate.
