Chapter 13 - The second lie

I found out about the $238,000 from Caroline.

Not Daniel.

That nearly ended our marriage.

We were in mediation-like counseling with a therapist named Dr. Alicia Brenner.

Not couples therapy to save us yet.

Crisis work.

I asked Daniel:

“Is there anything else you’ve left out?”

He said:

“No.”

A week later, Caroline called about a document she needed me to confirm had never been stored on my personal computer.

During the explanation, she mentioned:

“the reclassified payments Daniel disclosed.”

I stopped.

“What payments?”

Silence.

“Caroline?”

She realized.

“Daniel has not discussed that with you?”

“No.”

That evening I called him.

“Did you manipulate company books?”

“No.”

“Did you reclassify payments without supporting invoices?”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

My hands went cold.

“You told me there was nothing else.”

“I meant nothing related to the house.”

“No. You meant you wanted me to stop asking.”

“Emily.”

“You still don’t understand.”

He did not.

Not yet.

The intruder frightened me.

Daniel’s secrecy destabilized me.

Different harms.

Both real.
