Chapter 21 - I asked him to leave

Daniel’s apartment lease lasted fourteen months.
At first, people assumed we were divorcing.
I assumed it too some days.
I loved him.
I also did not trust his judgment around danger.
That combination is exhausting.
Our therapist asked me:
“What would Daniel have to do for you to feel safe?”
I answered:
“Tell me things before they become emergencies.”
Daniel nodded.
Then I added:
“Even if he thinks I’ll panic.”
He said:
“I thought I was protecting Lily.”
“No.”
“What do you think I was doing?”
“You were deciding for us which risks we were allowed to know about.”
He looked down.
That became the core of our work.
He had not abused me.
Had not threatened me.
Had not wanted the intruder near us.

I refused to call that protection.
