Chapter 25 - Daniel comes home
Daniel returned fourteen months after the break-in.
Not with a suitcase surprise.
We planned it.
He had started a new job at a smaller manufacturing company.
Director of financial planning.
Not CFO.
No glamorous title.
He told them about the Northline investigation during hiring because background questions required disclosure.
They hired him anyway after reviewing the board report and professional discipline.
His first week, he came home and said:
“My boss asked me to approve something without backup.”
I froze.
Then he smiled sadly.
“I said no.”
“What happened?”
“He sent the backup.”
“That easy?”
“That easy.”
We both laughed.
The lesson had cost too much.
Still useful.
Before Daniel moved back, we changed one rule.
No unilateral safety secrecy.
Not:
Tell me every workplace rumor.
Reasonable boundaries still existed.
But if he believed someone might follow him home, threaten him, access the house, target finances, or create physical risk:
Tell me.
Now.
Not after he built a private theory.
Same rule for me.
