Chapter 13 - Melissa’s money
Melissa’s involvement became a civil question.
Did she benefit from Ryan’s misuse of my signature?
Potentially.
Did she participate?
Evidence mixed.
She knew:
The acknowledgment was not fresh.
She told Ryan to disclose.
She remained in transaction.
She did not contact lender herself.
She had financial motive.
Then one email from her to Cobalt Ridge counsel:
Ryan says Lena consent is handled. Please confirm we are not relying on any document without lender verification.
That helped her substantially.
Counsel replied:
Lender will perform its own verification.
So Melissa could argue:
I knew lender would independently verify, therefore I did not believe fake paper could complete collateral.
Reasonable.
Then affair expenditures.
She had paid some hotel rooms herself.
Ryan paid others.
No hidden reimbursement from Cobalt Ridge for romantic travel except one Aspen hotel originally categorized as business development.
Was there legitimate meeting?
Yes, one investor dinner.
But extra night with Melissa.
Company reimbursed:
$1,260.
Ryan repaid Cobalt Ridge after audit.
Not enormous.
Then Melissa resigned from Cobalt Ridge advisory management.
Kept economic interest.
Why?
Conflict.
Reputation.
She also ended relationship with Ryan.
How did I know?
Her lawyer disclosed date because communications after it mattered.
Did I care?
Less than expected.
Then she requested mediation with me over potential civil claims.
My lawyer asked:
“What do you want?”
“Nothing from her.”
“Nothing?”
“I want her records preserved and truthful testimony.”
Could I sue for alienation of affection?
No, not a viable route here.
Could I sue for aiding fraud?
Evidence weak.
Could spend six figures proving anger.
No.
We entered a limited agreement:
Melissa preserved/produced relevant Cobalt Ridge communications.
I released no claims yet until financial case resolved.
No payment.
No apology required.
Then she asked through counsel whether she could send me a statement.

I said no.
I did not need her emotional closure.
