Chapter 7 - Melissa asks for immunity
Melissa hired attorney Claire Donnelly.
Different Claire name? Avoid. Use Paige Donnelly.
She offered cooperation with the financial investigation.
No formal immunity yet because prosecutors had not charged financial crimes.
Why cooperate?
She feared Ryan would blame her.
Reasonable.
Her records showed:
Ryan came up with the idea to use household liquidity.
Not Melissa.
Cobalt Ridge needed sponsor strength.
Ryan told her:
“Lena’s family money is sitting in low-yield garbage.”
Melissa replied:
“Can she pledge it?”
Ryan:
“She’ll sign.”
Later:
“She said no.”
Melissa:
“Then restructure.”
Ryan:
“She’ll come around.”
That helped Melissa.
Then another text:
Melissa:
Do not fake her signature.
My heart stopped.
Ryan:
I didn’t. It’s an acknowledgment from prior docs.
Melissa:
That sounds like fake with extra words.
There.
She knew something was wrong.
Did she report?
No.
She stayed in the deal.
Then:
If lender needs direct call, you have a problem.
Ryan:
I’ll handle Lena.
Melissa:
Don’t drag me into your marriage.
She was sleeping with him.
The irony almost hurt.
Then her profits interest.
If deal closed:
Projected promote value potentially:
$600k–$1.1m over several years if project succeeded.
Not guaranteed.
She had motive to keep transaction alive.
Did she participate in forged document?
No evidence she created or uploaded signature scan.
Did she know Ryan intended pressure?
Yes.
Text the day of assault:
Ryan:
She’s signing tonight.
Melissa:
If she says no, we walk from collateral and find another way.
Then later:
I’m coming over because you said we need to review closing. I’m not getting in middle of a domestic blowup.
That also helped her.
Then why was she in a silver cocktail dress?
She had been at a real-estate awards reception.
Not staged seduction.
Again, reality ruining my preferred villain.
She was still Ryan’s lover.
Still financially conflicted.
Still stood in my home while he pressured me.
Still minimized assault after.
But not mastermind.
Then Rachel said:
“Your husband may have been more dangerous because everyone around him kept assuming someone else would stop him.”
That included:
Melissa.
Me.
