Chapter 3

Noah was too still.

That was the first thing Emily noticed.

Not peaceful.

Still.

His face looked pale against the yellow blanket. His lips had a faint bluish tint. His tiny hands did not move when Emily touched his cheek.

“Noah?”

Marianne sighed behind her.

“Don’t wake him.”

Emily ignored her.

She lifted him carefully.

His head rolled too heavily against her arm.

“Noah.”

His breathing was there, but shallow.

Then his mouth opened weakly, and Emily saw enough to make her blood turn cold.

She screamed for Daniel even though he was not home.

Marianne grabbed her arm.

“Stop acting insane.”

Emily pulled away.

“I’m calling 911.”

“You will embarrass this family over a nap?”

Emily stared at her.

A nap.

That was what Marianne called it while Noah’s body lay limp in Emily’s arms.

The dispatcher kept Emily focused.

Check breathing.

Keep him positioned safely.

Do not give anything else by mouth.

Wait for responders.

Emily followed every instruction with shaking hands.

Marianne stood in the hallway, furious, not frightened.

That was the second thing Emily noticed.

Marianne was angry that Emily had called for help.

Not terrified that Noah needed it.

By the time Daniel arrived at the emergency department, he had already heard part of the story from Marianne.

Emily panicked.

Noah was tired.

The baby had a scare.

Daniel entered ready to question his wife.

Then he saw Noah on the hospital bed.

Saw Emily’s face.

Saw the nurses moving quickly but carefully.

And his anger began turning into fear.
