Chapter 7

Daniel wanted to deny it.

Emily could see the battle on his face.

He was a paramedic.

He knew what the doctor’s words meant.

He knew adult sedatives did not appear in a baby’s blood by accident.

He knew a bottle testing positive mattered.

But he was also Marianne’s son.

He had grown up believing his mother was strict, not dangerous.

Controlling, not cruel.

Difficult, not capable of this.

Marianne saw that conflict and tried to use it.

“Daniel,” she said, softening her voice, “you know me.”

He flinched.

Emily held Noah tighter.

Nurse Ruiz shifted closer to the bed, protecting the space without making a scene.

Marianne continued.

“I would never hurt him. She misunderstood. She always misunderstands.”

Emily looked up.

The old accusation again.

Emily panicked.

Emily misunderstood.

Emily was too emotional.

Emily made normal things sound dangerous.

But this time, the room had more than Emily’s fear.

It had a doctor.

A nurse.

A sealed bottle.

A blood finding.

Daniel swallowed.

“Did you put anything in his bottle?”

Marianne’s face tightened.

“I helped him sleep.”

Emily inhaled sharply.

Dr. Patel’s expression hardened.

Daniel stepped back as if the words had physically struck him.

Marianne realized too late what she had said.

“No. I mean—he was overtired. I gave him comfort.”

No one moved.

No one accepted the correction.

No final confession had happened.

Not fully.
