Chapter 6

Dr. Patel entered with the sealed bottle before Marianne could repair her mistake.
The bottle was inside a medical evidence bag.
No readable labels.
No dramatic reveal.
Just plastic, seal, and procedure.
That frightened Marianne more than shouting would have.
Shouting could be dismissed.
Procedure had weight.
Dr. Patel looked at Emily first.
“Mrs. Carter, Noah is breathing steadily right now, but we are still monitoring him closely.”
Emily nodded, unable to speak.
Daniel stepped beside her but did not touch her.
He seemed afraid she would pull away again.
Dr. Patel turned toward the room.
“His blood contains a powerful adult sedative.”
The words landed slowly.
Emily’s body went cold.
Daniel’s hand gripped the bed rail.
Marianne’s jaw tightened.
No denial came immediately.
That silence told on her.
Then she said, “That’s impossible.”
Dr. Patel did not argue.
He looked toward Nurse Ruiz.
Ruiz stepped forward with the blue clipboard.
“Doctor, the bottle from the nursery tested positive too.”
Daniel turned fully toward his mother.
“Mom.”
It was not a question this time.
It was the sound of a son realizing the woman who raised him might have put his child in danger.
Marianne looked toward the exit.
Not toward Noah.
Not toward Emily.
Not toward Daniel.
The exit.
Nurse Ruiz noticed.
Dr. Patel noticed.
May you like
Emily noticed most of all.
