Chapter 4

Nurse Elena Ruiz had seen many frightened parents.

Emily was frightened.

That was obvious.

But fear alone did not tell Ruiz what happened.

She watched patterns.

Who answered questions too fast.

Who avoided looking at the patient.

Who corrected the parent.

Who stood too close.

Who became angry when staff asked for details.

Marianne Carter did all four.

When Nurse Ruiz asked what Noah had taken that evening, Emily said, “Only his bottle.”

Marianne immediately added, “And nothing unusual.”

Ruiz looked at her.

“I asked his mother.”

Marianne’s mouth tightened.

Daniel noticed, but said nothing yet.

He was still trying to reconcile two worlds: the mother who raised him and the wife holding their son like she had dragged him back from the edge of death.

Dr. Patel ordered urgent testing and treatment without dramatics.

Noah began crying weakly after emergency care.

Emily broke down at the sound.

Daniel reached toward her, but she shifted away.

He saw it.

The distance.

The accusation in her silence.

Marianne crossed her arms and looked almost bored.

“He cries all the time. That’s the problem.”

Ruiz wrote that down.

Not visibly.

Not in a way Marianne could challenge.

But carefully.

Emily kept rocking Noah.

Then Daniel asked what exactly happened.

Emily turned on him, voice cracking.

“He was foaming at the mouth and turning blue!”

Daniel’s expression changed.

That was not panic over a sleepy baby.

That was a medical emergency.

Marianne’s face hardened.

And Nurse Ruiz watched her more closely than anyone else in the room.
