Chapter 5

Marianne had always believed Emily was weak.

She said it politely at first.

“You’re sensitive.”

“You overthink.”

“You weren’t raised with discipline.”

After Noah was born, the words became sharper.

“You’re making him dependent.”

“You’re ruining his sleep.”

“You need to stop letting a baby control the house.”

Emily tried to ignore it because Daniel hated conflict between them.

“She means well,” he would say.

Emily asked once, “Would you say that if she spoke to you that way?”

Daniel had no answer.

Marianne’s obsession with Noah’s sleep grew worse over time.

She sent articles.

Bought blackout curtains.

Rearranged the nursery without permission.

Once, Emily found a bottle already prepared on the dresser even though she had not asked Marianne to make one.

She threw it out.

Marianne was offended for two days.

“You act like I would harm my own grandson,” she said.

Emily apologized then.

Now, sitting in the emergency department, she wished she had trusted the discomfort instead of apologizing for it.

Marianne looked at Dr. Patel with chilled dignity.

“This is being exaggerated. The child needed rest.”

Dr. Patel paused.

“What do you mean by needed rest?”

Marianne blinked.

Only once.

But Nurse Ruiz saw it.

Emily saw it too.

Daniel turned slowly.

The phrase hung between them.

Not slept.

Not settled.

Needed sleep.

As if sleep were something that could be forced into a six-month-old body.

Daniel stepped forward, voice breaking.

“Mom… what did you give my son?”

Marianne took half a step back.

May you like

And Emily saw fear enter her face for the first time.
