Chapter 8

Emily felt guilt arrive even though she had done nothing wrong.

That is what fear does to mothers.

It asks why you were not watching every second.

Why you trusted anyone.

Why you took the shower.

Why you did not notice sooner.

Why you let someone else hold your baby.

Noah whimpered against her chest, small and exhausted.

Emily pressed her cheek gently to the top of his head.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

Dr. Patel heard and answered firmly.

“You brought him in. That matters.”

Emily looked at him through tears.

“He could have—”

“He is here,” Patel said. “We keep working from here.”

Nurse Ruiz lowered her voice.

“We also preserve what happened.”

Preserve.

That word steadied Emily.

The bottle.

The timeline.

Marianne’s statements.

The medication screen.

The nursery details.

No final report.

No courtroom.

No custody decision.

Just the beginning of truth being protected.

Daniel stood apart from his mother now.

Not far.

But enough.

Marianne saw the space and panicked quietly.

“You’re choosing her accusation over me?”

Daniel’s face twisted.

“I’m choosing my son.”

For once, Marianne had no quick answer.

Emily looked at Daniel.

She did not forgive him for doubting her when he entered.

Not yet.

But she saw the moment he crossed from denial into protection.
