Chapter 11 - The blue folder contents

The folder eventually became evidence because Millicent’s attorney produced relevant documents during discovery and the criminal investigation obtained program records through proper process.

Inside had been:

North Ridge intake confirmation.

Packing list.

Payment receipt.

A handwritten schedule.

Directions.

A hotel reservation for Millicent near the center for the first night.

And a note.

Not a kidnapping map.

Not forged passports.

A grandmother’s plan.

3:00 park.

4:45 leave.

5:30 snack in car.

6:45 arrival.

That timing was optimistic.

Connecticut to Pennsylvania traffic apparently obeyed her too.

Then:

Do not let Gideon derail this before intake.

There.

Another line:

If Silas cries, staff will handle separation.

Another:

Take familiar room items so first night is easier.

That explained the garbage bags.

She was not moving his entire bedroom permanently.

She was taking enough objects to make an unfamiliar residential room feel familiar.

Bedding.

Pillow.

Books.

Stuffed wolf.

Nightlight.

Amanda’s photograph.

She planned to leave them with him.

That was a different kind of horror.

Not:

Grandma wants to raise him forever.

Grandma intended to deliver him to a place for twenty-one days and believed my refusal was an obstacle to be managed.

My anger became colder.

The plan was not impulsive.

She had packed.

Paid.

Scheduled.

Copied.

Waited until I was at work.

The park was simply the holding area between school pickup and interstate departure.

Silas kept asking to go home because some part of him understood the routine had changed.

Millicent punished the resistance.
