Chapter 9 - My brother chooses Mom

My older brother Graham lived in Vermont.

Forty-four.

Married.

Two teenagers.

When he heard, he called me.

“You shoved Mom into mud?”

“Yes.”

“What the hell?”

“She shoved Silas.”

“I know.”

“She broke his toys.”

“I know.”

“She arranged a residential program without telling me.”

Pause.

“She said it was an assessment.”

“Residential.”

“For how long?”

“Twenty-one days.”

Silence.

Then:

“She probably thought you’d say no without considering it.”

I nearly hung up.

“You hear yourself?”

“I’m not saying she was right.”

“You’re saying my no was the problem.”

“No.”

“That’s exactly what you said.”

Graham exhaled.

“Gideon, you have been terrified of letting Silas experience anything hard since Amanda died.”

There.

A truth delivered at the wrong scale.

“Maybe.”

“So Mom thought—”

“Stop.”

He stopped.

“She copied my signature.”

Another silence.

“What?”

I sent him the documents.

Not the full legal packet.

Consent page.

School form showing the matching signature image.

His next call came an hour later.

“She told me you signed.”

“No.”

“She said you backed out after the park.”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

I laughed.

He heard himself.

“Sorry.”

Then:

“Jesus.”

Graham’s loyalty shifted slowly.

Not because I demanded.

May you like

Because the facts changed.

That mattered.
