Chapter 5 - The other parents

Child welfare identified seven families connected to Drusilla’s paid sessions over fourteen months.

Not fifty.

Not hundreds.

Seven.

Nine children total.

Ages:

Five to ten.

Some sibling pairs.

Did every child enter the shed?

No.

Four had.

How many were locked?

Three confirmed.

One uncertain.

Durations:

Twelve minutes.

Twenty-five.

Forty-three for Caleb.

One child, Josie Parker, age six, said she was placed inside for fifteen minutes after hitting her brother.

Her mother had known Drusilla used “quiet separation.”

She did not know the door was externally padlocked.

Another, Mason Bell, age nine, said he had to sit there twice.

He described:

Timer.

Notebook.

Camera.

He was not terrified.

He thought it was “weird.”

Children react differently.

Then Drusilla’s defense.

She never left property.

Ventilation.

Water.

Short durations.

No physical restraints.

No injuries.

Parents had authorized quiet-time consequences.

The prosecution would later argue:

Authorization to babysit does not equal authorization to lock children in an outbuilding.

Especially concealed from parents.

Then finances.

Total revenue from sessions:

About $27,600 over fourteen months.

Not a criminal empire.

Payments came through:

Checks.

Venmo.

Cash.

All mostly deposited into Drusilla’s personal checking.

Did she report income?

Her tax return had $18,000 miscellaneous consulting revenue.

Potential underreporting.

Accountant issue.

No tax fraud assumption.

Maybe timing differences/deductible expenses.

Separate.

Then expenses:

Garden supplies.

Snacks.

Crafts.

Insurance? No specialized liability insurance.

Camera.

Lock.

Advertising.

No staff.

She was a one-woman operation.

Then marketing.

No website.

Referrals.

Private Facebook parenting group.

Brochure:

Drusilla Carter, Retired Principal

Home-Based Parent Coaching & Respite

Structure • Calm • Consistency

No claim licensed therapist.

Then phrase:

Reset sessions available for children struggling with defiance.

There.

What were reset sessions?

Drusilla told parents:

Low-stimulation break.

Outdoor setting.

Journaling.

Breathing.

Calm return.

Not:

Padlocked shed.

Then why camera?

To show parents progress.

Some parents had received clips.

But they were edited.

Beginning:

Child upset.

Then later calm.

No visible locked door.

No camera angle showing confinement conditions fully.

That mattered.

Then one mother said:

“I thought the room was part of the house.”

Because Drusilla called it:

“The garden room.”

A shed with drywall, rug, shelf.

Misleading by omission.

Then Bramwell's employer? Not yet.

Then police.

Drusilla was charged initially with:

Misdemeanor assault/harassment related to Elowen? Because hose and physical handling.

And child-endangerment/unlawful-confinement-related charges involving Caleb.

Additional charges considered as more families interviewed.

No kidnapping fantasy.

No trafficking.

No criminal organization.

Still serious.

Then Drusilla’s lawyer said publicly:

“My client ran an informal childcare practice using disciplinary methods she believed parents had authorized.”

May you like

Believed.

That word would fight with the padlock.
